Georgia and Russia to re-open only border crossing

Georgia’s Foreign Ministry says it has reached a deal with Russia to open a border crossing that has been closed for three years.
It is the only highway crossing between Russia and Georgia that does not go through the Kremlin-backed rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Russia has failed to fully observe an EU-brokered peace deal that ended last year’s war with Georgia, the EU monitoring mission chief says.
Russia also has refused to let EU monitors enter Georgia’s breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, he said. Moscow has recognized the regions as independent states and kept thousands of troops there.

Georgia’s breakaway province of Abkhazia on Tuesday won recognition by the South Pacific island nation of Nauru, one of the world’s smallest states.
