Suspicious package found at Sen. Baucus’ office

The U.S. Capitol Police are investigating a suspicious package with a powdery substance that was found at the office of Sen. Max Baucus.
Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said there were no reports of illness. Schneider said the substance is being tested.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell says the first of 30,000 additional troops being sent to Afghanistan have begun to arrive.
Morrell says “the surge has begun in earnest.”

Kosovo and EU police arrested seven people on Wednesday in connection with the death of illegal migrants whose boat sank in a river between Hungary and Serbia two months ago, police said.

A U.N.-backed military operation in eastern Congo in which government soldiers are accused of massacring hundreds of civilians will end this month, the top U.N. official in Congo said on Wednesday.
The United Nations has backed Congolese government forces in a nine-month operation called Kimia II against Rwandan Hutu rebels in Congos east.

NATO to cut troop levels in Kosovo

Despite opposition from Serbia, NATO’s commander for Southeast Europe said the alliance will cut down its force in Kosovo by some 4,500 troops in January for possible use in hotspots like Afghanistan or Iraq.
Fitzgerald said the pullout is because NATO assessed the security situation in the region as improved.

An attorney for Rod Blagojevich says questioning President Barack Obama as a witness in the corruption case against the former Illinois governor would be “awesome,” but that he doesn’t know if it would be necessary or even possible.
