Moderates seek greater health care cost controls

Two moderate senators who could be critical to passage of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul on Friday pushed for greater cost containment measures in the landmark legislation.
Both have voiced opposition to the bill as written, with Lieberman threatening to filibuster over a proposed new government insurance plan to compete with the private market.

Federal investigators have found no misconduct by U.S. Forest Service personnel in the deaths of five firefighters in a massive 2006 California wildfire.

Texas executes killer of 11-year-old girl

A 44-year-old Texas man was executed Thursday evening for raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl, despite pleas from his attorneys he was too mentally impaired to qualify for capital punishment.
Tests administered to Woods put his IQ anywhere from the 60s to the 80s. An IQ of 70 is considered the threshold for mental impairment.

Mullen: 18-month target for Afghanistan flexible

The chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff is reiterating that the U.S. target date for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan is flexible and will take “conditions on the ground” into account.
The July 2011 target, Mullen told CBS’ “Early Show,” is when the U.S. will “start to transition security responsibilities to Afghan forces.
