Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, the Senate’s longest-serving member, has developed a serious infection and is being treated in the hospital with antibiotics.
Staph infections differ in severity depending on the site of infection, but are more of a threat to people with weakened immune systems and underlying chronic illnesses.

The American Civil Liberties Union has asked a court to allow the release of pictures of detainee abuse despite the Obama administration’s objections.
The Obama administration last week asked the court to keep the pictures secret. It says they could incite violence in Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON General Motors entered bankruptcy Monday morning, filing for Chapter 11 protection from its creditors. The filing triggered a number of immediate actions that affect the automaker, all of which lead to the temporary nationalization of the American icon for the foreseeable future.
Cisco Systems will replace GM on the Dow list of 30 market-moving companies.

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is at the White House, getting to know some of the people who are working on her confirmation.
The high court nominee was meeting with members of the White House counsel’s office.
